‘Fantastic Four 2’ Removed from 20th Century Fox Release Schedule; Reboot's Box Office Flop Blamed For Drop in Revenue

'Fantastic Four 2' may not happen after all. 20th Century Fox recently removed the planned sequel from its 2017 release schedule. Josh Trank's reboot was blamed for the studio's drop in revenue after it underperformed at the box office.

According to Collider, Josh Trank's 'Fantastic Four' reboot was criticized heavily after its release in 2015. The film was also blamed for 20th Century Fox's decline in revenue after it failed to catch up in the box office. A proposed sequel was also recently removed from the studio's line-up of scheduled releases.

The 2015 reboot starred Miles Teller as Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm a.k.a. The Human Torch, Kate Mara as Sue Storm a.k.a. The Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm a.k.a. The Thing and Toby Kebbell as Victor von Doom a.k.a. Doctor Doom. It premiered in New York on August 2015 and was panned by critics immediately. It also underperformed in sales earning only $168 million against a $120 million budget, according to GameSpot.

Fox previously announced plans for a sequel scheduled to be released on July 14, 2017. It was then rescheduled for June 2 of the same year. For a third time, the sequel was rescheduled for June 9 - just two weeks after a new 'Star Wars' film is slated to premiere.

According to Complex, the reasons for Fox's decision to remove 'Fantastic Four 2' from its release schedule remains unclear. It could be that studio heads are merely rethinking their strategy and putting the proposal in the backburner for the meantime. The removal of the sequel from the line-up could mean that it is indefinitely canceled or possible rescheduled for another date.

'Fantastic Four 2' is a planned sequel to 2015's reboot of the same name. It follows a group of Marvel superhero characters harnessing their superhuman abilities to save humankind from an impending threat. Its predecessor was considered the third theatrical release in the 'Fantastic Four' franchise released by 20th Century Fox.
