'James Bond 25' is a planned addition to the cinematic series of the same name. Director Sam Mendes of 'Skyfall' and 'Spectre' said that he didn't plan to return for a third project. Leading actor Daniel Craig, who plays the titular secret agent, may or may not return to reprise his role.
According to /Film, the 25th installment in the spy cinematic series is lacking a director. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes, who directed 'Spectre' and 'Skyfall', admitted that he will not be returning for a third time. He said, "Without giving too much away, the difference here for me is, this movie draws together all four of Daniel's movies into one final story, and he completes a journey. That wasn't the case last time. There is a sense of completeness that wasn't there at the end of 'Skyfall,' and that's what makes this feel different. It feels like there's a rightness to it, that I have finished a journey."
Mendes explained that he would much like to take on different projects for the meantime. It remains unclear whether he will be back to direct another future film in the franchise. During an interview with Deadline, the 50-year old director said that in order to reinvigorate an age-old franchise, one may have to go on a totally different direction and accept change.
Meanwhile, there is a possibility that Daniel Craig may not be returning for 'James Bond 25' either. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Michael G. Wilson revealed that Craig is not under contract to reprise his role as the titular secret agent. However, he remained optimistic of the Hollywood star's return for a sequel.
Craig portrayed James Bond for four of the latest films in the series - the latest 'Spectre', 2012's 'Skyfall', 2008's 'Quantum of Solace' and 2006's 'Casino Royale'. He took over the modern adaptation of agent 007 following in the footsteps of Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby and Sean Connery. The character, created by novelist Ian Fleming, first debuted in 1962's 'Dr. No'.
