HBO recently inked a deal with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolato through 2018. Rumor has it that several projects are in line for Pizzolato, including a possible third installment for the series.
According to Variety, a number of new projects from Pizzolatto are being considered, including future installments of True Detective, though a third season is still not a sure thing. Sources also say that the network has presented Pizzolatoo with a number of options for the show which includes him working with a new staff of writers, having a new showrunner come in or him going it alone again. Either way, Pizzolato would remain the show's executive producer.
Despite giving Pizzolatto a leeway, he needs to hand in his decision the soonest as possible so that HBO can move on with the production, according to a post from Christian Post.
To add, HBO executive Michael Lombardo previously expressed his desire to see yet another season of True Detective and that he'd be happy to work with Pizzolatto for a long time. On top of this, Lombardo defended Season 2 by reiterating the fact that "Nic...is one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today."
True Detective season 2, which starred Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, did not do well in the ratings compared to the first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Yet despite the bad reviews of season 2 by both critics and fans HBO is still opening its doors to a third season. According to Indiewire, the deal between HBO and Pizzolatto indicate what many already expected: HBO is not done with this lucrative property, and neither is Nic Pizzolatto.
Avid fans of True Detective series will have to wait a bit longer for any updates on the third installment of the series.
