'Alien 5' is a planned addition to the science-fiction horror franchise centered on Ellen Ripley's battles with dangerous extraterrestrial lifeforms. Neill Blomkamp's sequel may bring back a grown-up Newt as well as Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn. It is said to follow the events 20 years after 'Aliens'.
According to Coming Soon, Neill Blomkamp's long-delayed addition to the iconic Alien franchise is still pushing through. It may feature the return of Michael Biehn's Corporal Dwayne Hicks, Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley and most especially the character Rebecca "Newt" Jorden who was portrayed by child actress Danielle Edmond in 'Alien 3'.
Biehn revealed during an interview with Icons of Fright that the sequel may bring back Newt as a grown-up as it takes place roughly 20 years after the events of 'Aliens' from 1986.
According to Scified, he said, "They're planning on bringing me and Newt back and at this point Newt will be around twenty-seven years old. I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it's really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt. It would keep the franchise alive and the studios would make money, because that's what the bottom line is now: money."
Newt was first introduced in the franchise as a young girl who is the only survivor on LV-462's colony. The child formed a bond with Weaver's Ripley. Carrie Henn originally portrayed the character in the 1986 'Aliens' film but had to be replaced by Edmond for the 1992 'Alien 3' film.
According to IGN, Blomkamp's 'Alien 5' was put on hold indefinitely to accommodate Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' follow-up now entitled 'Alien: Covenant'. Scott, who helmed the first ever Alien film, will return as producer for 'Alien 5' but is currently focused more on the Prometheus project.
'Alien 5' is an upcoming science-fiction film to be directed by Neill Blomkamp. It may feature the return of Michael Biehn and Sigourney Weaver in the lead roles. The film is scheduled to be released some time in 2017.
