'Friday the 13th' is a planned reboot of the iconic horror franchise made popular in the 1980s. Its scheduled release date has been pushed back several times to accommodate the search for new scriptwriters. Nick Antosca, who wrote the first draft of the screenplay, revealed that the upcoming film will not be a follow-up to Marcus Nispel's 2009 reboot.
According to MoviePilot, the scheduled release date for the remake of the slasher film featuring fictional mass murderer Jason Voorhees has been moved for the nth time. This fueled fan speculation whether the film will push through at all.
It was originally slated for a cinematic premiere on March 13, 2015 and then adjusted for November 13 of the same year. Paramount then delayed it further for May 13, 2016 and finally January 13, 2017.
The film's new schedule puts it in competitions with other much-awaited flicks including the new 'Power Rangers' debut, Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' adaptation as well as Gerard Butler's thriller 'Geostorm'.
The reboot's delay may be attributed to the search for new screenwriters. It may be that Nick Antosca's version didn't work out so well with the project's bigwigs.
According to JoBlo, Antosca, who worked with 'Hannibal', was originally approached to pen the script. He eventually turned in a screenplay that was reportedly set in the 1980s and returned to the franchise's summer camp roots.
The American slasher film franchise began with a boy who mysteriously drowned at Camp Crystal Lake due to staff negligence. This boy was later revealed to be Jason Voorhees, a masked murderer, who takes his revenge around the area giving Camp Crystal Lake its "cursed" reputation. The character is considered the films' primary antagonist and is best known for his iconic hockey mask.
Jason reappeared into mainstream media yet again in Marcus Nispel's remake of the same name in 2009. According to Dread Central, Antosca previously revealed that the upcoming 'Friday the 13th' remake will not be a sequel to the 2009 film. The writer took to Twitter to answer a fan question saying, "it's not a sequel to the 2009 version. Different characters, time period, style."
'Friday the 13th' is a planned reboot of the iconic American franchise featuring the fictional mask-wearing murderer Jason. The first film was released in 1980 under the direction of Sean S. Cunningham while latest remake was released in 2009 with Marcus Nispel as director. The horror franchise comprises 12 films in addition to numerous television series, comic books and novels as of the present.
