'Sharknado' boosts Syfy viewership

By

The Syfy channel is no stranger to bad special effects, out of this world storylines and programs with terrible acting. Last Friday, the channel's latest effort was shown - Sharknado. The B-movie is exactly what it sounds like, sharks in a tornado. While it seems like the program is destined for failure and into the ratings abyss, nobody expected it to gain worldwide attention.

Neilsen reported that almost one and a half million people viewed the made-for-television film. Social media has been buzzing about the program even as of current writing.

Syfy usually garners an average of 1 million concurrent viewers for its shows. The channel is part of NBC Universal, a conglomerate media firm which is a subsidiary of Comcast.

Because of the unexpected boost in viewership, the channel said that it would show Sharknado again in the future. The encore is expected to gain more than the original showing, considering the media frenzy and internet buzz it generated.

Ratings of cable television are directly related to how much profit the channel gains. According to the company's website, Comcast has increased in the stock market for a little less than 0.5% at the time of writing.
