On December 2, the beta of the second update patch was released for Fallout 4 on Steam, but, to the annoyance of the console players, neither update patch betas were made available for the PS4 and Xbox One.
To those who are unaware, Fallout 4 is an open-world action RPG that focuses on the player's actions and interactions while trudging through a blasted wasteland of post-apocalyptic USA, exploring the centuries-old aftermath of a massive world war that ended with all involved parties ordering nuclear strikes at each other, and exploring the remnants of the 50's themed, Diesel Punk alternate history that spawned this predicament in the first place. Fallout 4 is the 3rd sequel of the original Fallout, and has the players controlling the lone, cryogenically-frozen survivor of a Vault that explores the drastically different society of post-war USA while dealing with the grief of losing his family and neighbors and trying to find answers as to why it happened.
For the players who own the PC version of Fallout 4, both update patches are still under beta testing, and can be tried out at the same time. Reportedly, Bethesda is releasing the update patches slowly for the PC editions only before releasing those updates on the console editions to avoid any issues. To quote from their statement on the Bethesda blog, "(...)Expect to see more updates (...) This allows us to make sure each fix is working right, as any change can have unintentional side effects in a game this huge.(...)"
Currently, both patches on Steam feature general improvements on stability and performance, some bug fixes that prevent progression, and a couple of extra functions that help streamline the gameplay. While there are still reports of bugs and problems, the development team actively encourages the community to report anything amiss that they may find before they roll out a new patch.
To those who want to avail of the update patch betas, simply do the following:
1. Log into Steam.
2. Right Click on Fallout 4 in your Library.
3. Select Settings.
4. Select Betas.
5. A drop down menu will appear. Select Beta Update.
6. Select OK.
7. Wait a few minutes and Fallout 4 should update.
8. When done, Fallout 4 should appear as Fallout 4 [beta] in your Library.
Fallout 4 is available on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One for $59.99.
