eBay hops in on 3D print bandwagon

By

eBay is the latest company to invest in the world's latest technology craze - 3D printing. Early this morning, the online merchant company announced that they released a new iOS application called the eBay Exact.

3D printing enables anyone to print anything, literally. Experts in the industry say that this is the single most important development in the consumer market today. With 3D printing, for example, shoppers no longer need to go to stores or wait for delivery.

With just a push of a button, a printer can 'print' any object illustrated and defined in the computer into the physical world. Shoppers now only need to buy the rights for a product's design, and they can print their own merchandise.

The iPhone application uses the 3D printing principle. Users are allowed to browse and purchase items which are customizable and categorized as 'print on demand'.

This gives the power of designing the product to the consumer. The users send their custom designs to eBay, who partnered with 3D printing firms such as Sculpteo and MakerBot.
