While it is literally years away from its release, a rumor about a potential partnership between Apple and Japan Displaysuggest that the forthcoming iPhone 8 might feature a organic light-emitting diode displays.
As reported by International Business Times, the Japanese newspaper Nikkan revealed that Japan Display is currently in talks with Apple to ensure orders of OLED displays for their upcoming smartphone release in 2018.
While Apple has not officially confirmed the news yet, the handset is rumored to be the iPhone 8. According to Digital Trends, the Cupertino firm is currently using IPS LCD and has only released OLED for its smartwatch which was supplied by LG.
Japan Display is reportedly planning on convert one of their Ishikawa factories into a test site for iPhone OLED, and the company is eyeing on having mass production for iPhone in 2018 which is also the alleged same year for the release of the iPhone 8.
According to Mac Rumors, the potential deal between companies can put Japan Display as a competitor against Samsung and LG who have been panel suppliers in the past. LG even reportedly invested $8.2 billion on a facility where OLED panels for TVs, wearables, and other devices will be produced.
The OLED display will reportedly allow the company to get rid of the backlighting for their devices since it allows every pixel to be individually lit. Its reported to be good for the aesthetic of the device as it provides sharper images for the smartphone, better color accuracy, and brighter colors. However, its down side would be its considerably shorter lifespan, and its higher manufacturing cost.
Aside from the potential OLED display, no other features were revealed yet for iPhone 8 as it is still far from its actuality and release. Should Apple and Japan Display officially push through with the deal, will be reported as soon as the information is revealed.
