'You're the Worst' Season 3 Update: New season will not be redundant, trying too hard says Stephen Falk

By

FXX announced the renewal of the critically acclaimed anti-romantic series "You're the Worst" on the day of the show's Season 2 penultimate episode. Next season is slated to premiere in the summer of 2016 despite the past season's fall premiere.

"You're the Worst" had its initial run on FX before moving to FXX. Additionally, series creator and EP Stephen Falk has signed an overall deal to develop and produce projects for FX Networks and FX Prods.

FX Networks' Nick Grad has referred to Falk as one of the best new talents in comedy and said he could not wait for what Falk comes up with next. According to Screen Crush, he said, "You're the Worst is also one of the most innovative, something Stephen and the cast will continue in the much-deserved third season. The daring turn this season, led by the honest and respectful portrayal of Gretchen's depression, was a very courageous move for a comedy and another milestone for You're the Worst."

The series renewal follows on the heels of the recent cancellation of its fellow FX sophomore comedy "Married".The two moderately rated comedies were both picked up for second seasons based on the network's bosses faith in creative success. However, ratings for both shows have continued to be low and even had year-to-year double digit drops.

"You're the Worst" is described by Deadline as a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either. It's the story of Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere), and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners. Desmin Borges and Kether Donohue also star.

Recent episodes of "You're the Worst" have taken a daring detour by exploring clinical depression. The story arc has proven to be polarizing in that some fans found it taxing while others said it made for some compelling viewing.

TV Series Finale reports that Falk has this to say about the depression storyline, " I think a lot of people who watch feel pessimistic about Jimmy and Gretchen's chances, and I acknowledge that. There certainly are hints that can be seen in the opening theme song lyrics ["gonna leave you anyway"]."

Falk has also revealed that for "You're the Worst" Season 3, he wouldn't want it to feel redundant or feel like they were trying too hard. He also does not want the fans to see them try to recreate something or puff themselves out. He said he just felt good that the show avoided the sophomore slump.
