Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones have been qualified for an Android 6.0 Marshmallow update through crDroid custom ROM released earlier this week. Although the upgrade is unofficial, the custom ROM promises to fare well with the official build.

Galaxy S4 must be rooted, unlocked and installed with a recovery tool. Charge up phone to at least 40 percent to prevent power interruption.

To begin the process, here's a good way to go:

1. Download the crDroid Marshmallow ROM and Google Apps Package.

2. Save it on a PC.

3. Connect phone to PC using a cable.

4. Copy the downloaded files from PC to phone.

5. Disconnect phone and shut it down.

6. Boot into recovery mode by simultaneously press holding volume up, home and power buttons.

7. Perform a Nandroid backup of your current software.

8. Perform wipe data tasks.

9. Install zip from sdcard.

10. Confirm flashing process.

11. Go to main recovery menu.

12. Restart device.

Wait until the process is confirmed finished.
