Radiohead lead vocalist Thom York recently pulled out all of his music from online music streaming service provider Spotify. The front man angrily tweeted his disappointment over the website's business model for new music artists.
The rock start said on his Twitter page, "new artists get paid f*** all". Music producer echoed Yorke's sentiment, "it's bad for new music."
"The numbers don't even add up for Spotify yet. But it's not about that. It's about establishing the model which will be extremely valuable," said the producer, who made Radiohead's albums.
He tweeted, "Meanwhile small labels and new artists can't even keep their lights on. It's just not right."
Spotify provides limited free streaming of music on their website. An unlimited service is also offered for just GBP5 and GBP10 for a month. Artists expressed their dissent over this business model, stating that it is less effective for them to enable access in Spotify than selling CDs and digital downloads. They said that the per-stream payments are relatively cheap.
Spotify gained major backing from large investors such as The Coca-Cola Company.
