Following the famous release of Metta World Peace, Mike Miller is the latest NBA player on the receiving end of the amnesty clause. Miami Heat President Pat Riley previously stated that they will not use the amnesty clause on the hoop star, but they did exactly just that.
Riley retracted his previous statement saying, "After many discussions internally and a sincere effort to explore the trade market, we made a very difficult decision to use our amnesty provision on Mike Miller."
"This was a very difficult decision for me personally, the Arison family, Erik (Spoelstra) and the entire Miami Heat organization. Mike was one of the best we have ever had here, and will be sorely missed. We wish Mike, his wife Jennifer and their family nothing but the best," the Miami Heat president added.
The Miami Heat will pay US$12.8 million to Miller, as stipulated in his contract.
The amnesty provision grants NBA teams to release a player if they deem that the contracts are unnecessarily detrimental to the finances of the team.
According to analysts, Miller's exit from the Miami Heat will save them US$16 million in luxury tax payments.
