Whole Foods in Everett, Massachusetts has recalled around 73,898 pounds of pepperoni pizza products due to misbranding on Monday. The recalling has been made followed by an announcement made by Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) under the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The recalled products have been labeled to contain uncured beef pepperoni. But FSIS has found the pizzas to contain uncured pork pepperoni, which is not declared on the product label. Some individuals are reportedly sensitive or intolerant to pork.
The problem has been discovered during a label review of Whole Foods. The problem is believed to take place as result of a change in ingredient suppliers, reports WMUR quoting FSIS.
The products under recall bear establish number 'EST. 20234' inside the USDA mark of inspection. These are scheduled to be sold between Jan 12, 2015 to January 30, 2016, as printed on the packaging. The mislabeled items have been shipped for wholesale and retail sale in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Islands, according to the FSIS news release published in its website. FSIS suggests the Whole Foods customers to return or throw out the mislabeled pizzas, assuming they haven't already eaten them. However, the recall applies both to the eight and ten inch sizes, sold mostly in New England, reports AOL News. No confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, marked as Class II Recall Products, are available. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify whether recalling firms only notify their customers of the recall. Major aim of the recall is to ensure that those products are no longer available for the consumers. USDA conducts recall under three categories. Class I represents a health hazard situation with a reasonable probability that the use of the product may cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Class II stands for a health situation related to remote probability of adverse health consequences from taking these products. However, Class III describes the situation with no adverse health consequences. Whole Foods has advised consumers to contact at (512) 477-5566 ext. 20060 from Monday to Friday during 8 am to 5 pm (Central Standard Time), for questions about the recall. Media houses are requested to place their question to Heather McCready through email- heather.mccready@wholefoods.com. FSIS conducts recalling of food products in regular basis aiming to remove the possibly hazardous products from the market. The food safety authority has recalled 73,898 pounds of pepperoni pizza from Whole Foods outlets for mislabeling. It has also suggested the Whole Foods customers to refrain from taking these products. Whole Foods also requests to report adverse events centering the Class II standard hazardous products.
