Iowa lottery officials urge players to double-check their tickets as a $500,000 Powerball jackpot remains unclaimed a week after the draw.
The Sun reports that the winning ticket, matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball, was sold at a Kwik Star gas station in Mason City, Iowa. Despite numerous appeals, the ticket holder has not come forward to claim their prize.
Lottery Winner Has 6 Months to Claim Prize
Under Iowa Lottery rules, winners have six months from the draw date to make a claim-failure to do so results in forfeiture of the prize. In addition, the Kwik Star gas station will receive a $500 bonus from the Iowa Lottery.
This unclaimed prize adds to the list of outstanding winnings in Iowa, including a $2,000,000 Powerball jackpot sold at Clinton Liquor in Clinton.
Millions in Lottery Prizes Unclaimed
Across the pond, other unclaimed prizes include a $1 million prize in Minnesota and a $1.7 million Mega Millions prize in California.
Meanwhile, in Florida, a $36 million Mega Millions prize went unclaimed due to a missed deadline. Funds from unclaimed tickets in Florida are allocated to education and the prize pool under state law.
Lottery players are reminded to check their tickets regularly and claim their winnings within the specified timeframe to avoid missing out on potential windfalls.
