President Joe Biden has reiterated his concerns about the threat posed by Donald Trump to Social Security if he wins back the White House despite the former president vowing not to make cuts related to the essential program.
Joe Biden Says Donald Trump to Cut Social Security if the Former President Wins Again
In a post on X on Sunday, Joe Biden highlighted Donald Trump's past attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He also said that the former president is now running with the intent to "terminate" it and potentially make cuts to Medicare and Social Security.
"Donald Trump was just one vote away from repealing the Affordable Care Act. Now, he's determined to try again, running to 'terminate' it-and cut Medicare and Social Security while he's at it. I won't let it happen," the president wrote.
However, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung dismissed the claims, telling Newsweek that the former president has consistently pledged not to touch Social Security and Medicare.
The future of Social Security has emerged as a prominent issue ahead of the 2024 election, which is anticipated to be a rematch between Biden and Trump.
The Stance of Donald Trump on Social Security and Medicare
Joe Biden's comments came after the former president hinted at his openness to cutting Social Security and Medicare in an interview earlier this month. He had previously been opposed to touching the programs.
He said on CNBC's Squawk Box: "There is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements." Days after the interview, Trump sought to backtrack his comments on Squawk Box.
"I made a promise that I will always keep Social Security, Medicare... We always will keep it. We never will cut it," the former president said at a rally in Ohio, as the Associated Press reported.
He also warned his supporters that Social Security would be at risk if Biden wins a second term, adding that his rival was "destroying the economics of our country."
During his State of the Union address earlier this month, Biden vowed to protect Social Security and Medicare. He also accused Republicans of wanting to cut the programs while favoring tax breaks for the wealthy.
