Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, is reportedly testing a new feature that allows X users to either create or join groups tailored to "adult content" or "not safe for work" (NSFW) material.
According to BBC, users who create a community within the X app can opt to specify in the settings that their group contains adult-sensitive content. From there, X will affix an "adult content" label to these groups, providing users with clear indicators of the nature of the content they might encounter.
Who Can Make "Adult Groups" on X?
However, it's uncertain whether Elon Musk's X will ultimately implement age verification protocols for users accessing these NSFW groups. The platform's current policies already restrict certain content, such as graphic media, adult nudity, and sexual behavior, for viewers under 18 or those who have not provided their birth date on their profile.
Interestingly-X's decision to introduce NSFW groups coincides with a period where lawmakers and social media platforms are increasingly concerned about keeping teenagers safe online. More attention has been paid to protecting young users from potentially harmful content, leading platforms to reconsider how they moderate content and ensure user safety.
Recently, a VCPost report discussed a possible social media ban on minors, which Florida Governor De Santis already signed.
But by openly supporting NSFW content and considering features aimed at adult users, X is distinguishing itself from other social media platforms where user interests and preferences are allowed.
