Nicola Horlick, a fund manager, revealed that she is attempting to gather GBP150,000 for her new venture, Glentham Capital. Ms. Horlick is better known as a "Superwoman," a name that she got after achieving a rapid climb to the position of director at Mercury Asset Management and at the same time bringing up a fairly young family.
She is planning to raise the funds by asking the assistance of Britain's population of small-time investors. Today, she is selling 10% of her new business through the online crowdfunding firm Seedrs. The website allows entrepreneurs to present their ideas for seed capital and to hopefully get their startups off the ground.
"Traditionally a business like Glentham Capital would have raised its seed capital from a handful of small, wealthy investors, and it could well have chosen to do so in this case. But Horlick feels that opening up the previously-closed world of fund management so that a wide range of investors can participate is good for business, good for investors and good for the market," a spokesman for the firm explained.
The original intent of the new venture will be to provide financing for Hollywood films but Ms. Horlick is taking into account the launching specialist funds instead.
"Having been a fund manager for the past 30 years, I know what a great opportunity it can be to invest in a fund management company. In the old days, there was no way that I could have opened an opportunity like this to the crowds, but Seedrs provides me with the perfect opportunity to do so," Ms. Horlick explained.
