US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has issued a cautionary statement regarding potential Chinese interference in the upcoming elections. According to him, the US has seen evidence that China attempted to influence and interfere in US electoral processes.
Blinken Warns About China's Interference in US Elections 2024
According to CNN Politics, during an interview on Friday, Apr. 26, Blinken talked about China's attempts to disrupt and influence US elections. The state secretary reiterated a message that US President Joe Biden had already told Chinese President Xi Jinping during a summit in San Francisco in November 2023. Xi replied, pledging that China would not do so.
"We have seen, generally speaking, evidence of attempts to influence and arguably interfere, and we want to make sure that that's cut off as quickly as possible," explained Antony Blinken.
"Any interference by China in our election is something that we're looking very carefully at and is totally unacceptable to us, so I wanted to make sure that they heard that message again," he added.
What China Says About Blinken's Accusations
The Guardian reported that China didn't comment on Antony Blinken's accusations nor give a statement about the possible sanctions the US could impose against the Asian nation over its support of Russia.
However, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Friday that any Chinese attempt to disrupt the US elections would lead to undoing the progress made in US-China relations. He added that this could lead to a downward spiral of rivalry, confrontation, as well as conflict.
