A significant fire broke out in Bushwick, Brooklyn, causing extensive damage to several buildings on Wednesday evening.
The incident resulted in thick smoke filling the air for an extended period of time.
FDNY Mobilizes Over 250 Firefighters to NY Supermarket Fire
According to FDNY officials, firefighters swiftly arrived at the scene of a fire at a supermarket located on the corner of Bushwick Avenue and Cooper Street, responding to an urgent call just before 6 p.m.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that the flames had already begun to spread to nearby buildings. The fire rapidly escalated to five alarms, prompting the immediate response of more than 250 firefighters.
FDNY Assistant Chief Tom Currao said the primary fire originated in the supermarket and subsequently extended to two neighboring wood-frame houses.
It then proceeded to spread down Cooper Street, affecting at least two additional wood-frame residences. According to CBS News, there are about 30 individuals residing in the homes. Assistance is being provided by the Red Cross to those impacted by the incident.
Firefighters Treated for Minor Injuries at Hospital
Footage from Chopper 4 captured the intense fire as it engulfed the roofs and billowed smoke into the night for hours. According to NBC New York, the smoke was visible and had a distinct odor that reached as far as Central Park in Manhattan.
FDNY Assistant Chief of EMS Operations Cesar Escobar said five firefighters were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Another firefighter and a civilian were also being treated on the scene for minor injuries and smoke inhalation, respectively. Currao said there is still a significant amount of activity happening late Wednesday night. The FDNY is anticipated to stay at the scene for an extended period of time.
FDNY officials have reported that a dog was removed from a home. FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer expressed his sympathy for the affected residents.
