Contractors trying to locate an extension cable on the roof of a Michigan grocery shop found an unexpected discovery: a 34-year-old woman was living within the business sign, with enough space for a computer, printer, and coffee maker, according to authorities.
Homeless Woman's Year-Long Residence on Michigan Store Sign
According to Officer Brennon Warren of the Midland Police Department, the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, informed the authorities that she had been employed elsewhere but had been residing within the Family Fare sign for approximately one year.
Warren said the woman was able to get electricity by plugging a power wire into an outlet on the roof. The sign structure is approximately 5 feet wide and 8 feet high and has a door that can be accessed from the roof.
"There was some flooring that was laid down. A mini desk," he said.
There was no indication of a ladder, according to Warren. According to Warren, it is possible that the woman accessed the roof by expanding a different area behind the store or adjacent retail establishments.
"I honestly don't know how she was getting up there. She didn't indicate, either," he stated, according to AP News.
The Family Fare store is located in a retail strip, featuring a distinctive triangle-shaped sign atop the building. Located 130 miles (209 kilometers) north of Detroit, Midland is widely recognized as the global headquarters of Dow Inc., CBS News reported.
Homeless Woman Cooperates, No Charges Filed
A representative from SpartanNash, the parent company of Family Fare, stated that the employees at the store handled the situation with great compassion and professionalism.
Warren stated that the woman was very cooperative and willingly agreed to leave without any hesitation. No charges were pursued, indicating a lack of legal action.
The homeless woman expressed regret and carried on with her journey.
