Elon Musk's X is considering a major update that could alter how users engage with its content: hiding likes by default.
Elon Musk's X Plans to Make Likes Private by Default
While X Premium members have had this option for some time, the platform plans to extend it to all users. This move aims to address concerns that public likes discourage some individuals from interacting with content deemed "edgy."
According to a tweet from Haofi Wang, a director of engineering at X, the platform is planning to make likes private, highlighting how public likes often incentivize undesirable behaviors. Many users refrain from liking content they perceive as controversial to avoid potential backlash or damage to their public image.
Liking Without Worrying on X
This potential change would allow users to express themselves freely without worrying about who might see their likes. Notably, Elon Musk, the owner of X, acknowledged this tweet by liking it.
Currently, most X users have their likes publicly displayed on their profiles, showcasing the content they engage with to all users. While X introduced the option for paying subscribers to hide their likes last September, the recent tweet hints at a broader implementation of this feature.
"Soon you'll be able to like without worrying who might see it. Also a reminder that the more posts you like, the better your For you algorithm will become," Haofei said in a post on X.
