IRS To Make Direct File Free Tax-Filing Permanent

According to NBC News, the IRS confirmed that its Direct File program will become permanent starting in 2025. The initiative was initially launched on a limited basis.

Although it's still a pilot program, the Direct File free tax-filing option helped 140,000 taxpayers claim over $90 million in refunds. Aside from this, the initiative also helped them save an estimated $5.6 million in filing costs.

"The clear message is that many taxpayers across the nation want the IRS to provide more than one no-cost option for filing electronically," said IRS commissioner Danny Werfel via their official press release.

Why Making Direct File Permanent Is a Big Deal

Danny Werfel said that starting with the 2025 filing season, they will make the Direct File program a permanent free tax filing option for federal tax returns.

He added that this program would allow American taxpayers additional options, improving the nation's tax filing system.

"And adding Direct File to the menu of filing options fits squarely into our effort to make taxes as easy as possible for Americans, including saving time and money," Danny stated.

The IRS said it wants to allow all U.S. states to participate in the Direct File program and expand it so more Americans can receive assistance in the most common tax situations.
