Elon Musk Accuses Kathleen Kennedy of Gender Bias in 'Star Wars'

This has faced backlash due to its storyline involving lead characters who are described as "lesbian space witches."

Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm since Disney's acquisition of the company in 2012, has stood by her choice of Leslye Headland as the director of 'The Acolyte,' now available for streaming on Disney+.

Kathleen Kennedy Defends Female Leads Amid Fan Backlash in 'Star Wars'

Headland, the trailblazing creator of a TV series for the franchise, has made a conscious effort to enhance the diversity of 'The Acolyte' by selecting a talented cast that includes Amandla Stenberg, who identifies as nonbinary and gay, as well as Korean star Lee Jung-jae.

Kennedy expressed her concern over the negative response from certain fans towards the recent 'Star Wars' films and TV series that have featured female leads, such as Daisy Ridley's portrayal of Rey in the sequel trilogy.

According to the New York Post, Headland addressed the criticism in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last week, stating that she did not consider 'The Acolyte' to be explicitly queer.

Disney has faced backlash in recent years for incorporating more socially conscious content in order to reach a wider audience.
