A major recall has been issued for select canned tuna products sold at major retailers, including Walmart, Costco, and Trader Joe's, due to a potential contamination risk.
Tri-Union Seafoods, the manufacturer of the affected products, announced the recall after discovering a defect in the "easy-open" pull-tab lids, which could lead to improper sealing.
This problem raises the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause botulism, a rare but potentially deadly illness.
According to CNN, the recall impacts products under several brands, including Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B, and Trader Joe's.
No illnesses have been reported so far, but the company is urging consumers to check their pantries for the affected cans and dispose of them immediately.
Botulism, caused by this bacterium, can result in severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and in some cases, paralysis and difficulty breathing.

How to Identify Recalled Tuna Cans: UPC Codes and Best-By Dates to Watch
The recalled cans were sold across major grocery chains such as Costco, Walmart, Kroger, and Publix, with specific products marked with UPC codes and "Best if Used By" dates.
The affected items include Genova Solid White Tuna and Van Camp's Solid Light Tuna, as well as Trader Joe's Solid Light Yellowfin Tuna and Solid White Tuna.
To identify the recalled products, customers should check the UPC codes and dates printed on the bottom of the cans, EatThis said.
Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them. Instead, they can return the affected cans to the store for a full refund.
Alternatively, Tri-Union Seafoods is offering a retrieval kit and a replacement coupon. For assistance, customers can contact the company at 833-374-0171.
Symptoms of botulism can appear within 12 to 36 hours after exposure and may include blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and difficulty speaking.
In severe cases, the illness can be fatal. If any of these symptoms occur after consuming canned tuna, immediate medical attention is necessary.
Tri-Union Seafoods assures customers that this recall is a precautionary measure and emphasizes that only specific batches are affected.
