Segway has announced the recall of approximately 220,000 electric scooters following reports of a dangerous mechanical failure.

The recall affects all Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters, as the folding mechanism can malfunction while in use, posing a serious fall hazard.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the company has received 68 reports of the issue, with 20 incidents resulting in injuries such as broken bones, bruises, and lacerations.

The affected scooters were sold nationwide between January 2020 and February 2025 at major retailers including Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, Sam's Club, and Amazon.

The Ninebot Max G30P model is black with yellow accents, while the Max G30LP version is gray with yellow details. Both models display the brand name "ninebot" on the foot platform and handlebars, The Verge said.

Segway is advising consumers to stop using the recalled scooters immediately. Instead of offering replacements, the company is providing a free maintenance kit with tools and instructions to inspect and tighten the folding mechanism.

Consumers can contact Segway to determine whether their scooter needs adjustment and how to properly secure the faulty component.

Segway Urges Scooter Owners to Take Safety Action Now

Segway has set up multiple contact options for affected consumers. Owners of the recalled scooters can reach the company by phone at 800-914-6110 (Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm), by email at recall@segway.com, or through their website at segway.com by visiting the "Recall Center" section.

According to CBS News, this is not the first time Segway has faced safety issues with its products.

In November 2024, the company recalled 1,400 Ninebot P100 KickScooters after receiving 31 reports of broken front forks, leading to six injuries.

Additionally, in March 2022, Segway recalled its Ninebot Kids bike helmets for failing to meet federal safety standards.

As electric scooters continue to grow in popularity for urban transportation, safety remains a top concern. The latest recall serves as a reminder for consumers to stay informed about potential product hazards and take necessary precautions.

Segway urges all affected scooter owners to take immediate action to prevent accidents and ensure a safer riding experience.
