Nokia Corp., a Finnish device maker, has been criticized by both analysts and venture capitalists for choosing the mobile platform of Microsoft over the Android operating system of Google. Analysts said that Windows Phone's success were highly due to Nokia's efforts.
Windows Phone was recently ranked as the world's third operating system in terms of market share. Microsoft's Windows Phone market share rose to 3.7% compared with last year's 3.1%. Nokia's new line up of Lumia phones accounted for the growth. The company was able to ship 81% of all the Windows Phone units in the second quarter.
The market share of Windows Phone has been growing in Australia, France and Great Britain. Its market share remained consistent in Germany and Spain while Italy recorded the highest adoption rate of Windows Phone.
During the second quarter, Nokia narrowed its loss to Eur115 million compared with the company's Eur824 million loss in 2012. However, its revenue dropped to Eur5.7 billion due to the decrease in sales. Nokia sold 7.4 million mobile devices in the second quarter. Its total shipment volume plunged by 27% from last year's 83.7 million to this year's 61.1 million.
