August 26 is National Dog Day. This celebration started back in 2004 in recognition of the high number of shelter pets that seek a good home. The day also seeks to encourage the adoption of these shelter pets to save them from being put down.

Dog ownership, because of its pervasive nature, has become as ubiquitous as an economic indicator. It has spawned whole industries, from breeders to walkers to medical assistance and even dog accessories and food. Many other businesses have been spawned from the dog lover's passions, such as dog shows, grooming and spas for pets and even puppy hotels.

Among the top five countries in the world in terms of dog population is as follows: India, Philippines, Venezuela, Russia and Argentina. The countries that spend the highest for their beloved canines are Norway, who spend about USD53.22 per month on food, Switzerland with USD36.09 per month, Australia with USD31.44 per month, Sweden at USD28.81 per month and Austria at USD28.44 per month. The figures come from Euromonitor's survey of costs of dog pampering.
