Kenyan runners won the women's and men's titles for the New York City Marathon. Kenya's Priscah Jeptoo won the women's race over Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba. Jeptoo finished Sunday's race in 2 hours, 25 minutes sand 7 seconds. She also got a USD 500,000 bonus for winning the women's title in the World Marathon Majors.
Meanwhile, Geoffrey Mutai bagged the men's race in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 24 seconds. The second place finisher in the men's race was Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia.
Race fans told the NY Daily News that police officers kept a close watch of the event. Foot patrols could be seen on street corners. Runners were also checked by police before the marathon began.
The Boston Marathon bombings in April this year killed three people. It also inflicted injuries on 264 others. NBC News reported that the financial cost of the bombings caused the local economy USD 333 million in damages. This represented lost wages, damage to infrastructure and retail sales losses.
