Google Inc's new computer-powered glasses aren't available on the shelves yet but, don't worry, efforts are in place to keep them from not just becoming a niche product for nerds.
In a sign that both the eyeware industry and Google sees a broader market for such technology, Google is now exploring with at least one eyewear company to place the device in optometry offices. To simply create alternative designs.
VSP Global - a nationwide vision benefits provider, is in talks with Google about making more fashionable and trendy frames for the device, developing special prescription lenses to use along with Glass and at the same time, training optometrists to fit the device for customers, VSP Chief Executive Rob Lynch said.
Negotiations are still in its infancy and so far, no company has any formal agreement made with Google. But VSP, which provides a vision plan for Google's employees would indeed be a crucial partner for taking Glass to the streets. The company has a networkof 30,000 eye doctors and 60 million people are enrolled in VSP's workplace and individual vision plans.
The main hurdle will be in creating versions of the eyewear that consumers would be comfortably wearing. Google Glass does come without lenses so it is possible to wear the device with regular glasses, but early adopters whom have obtained early models woudn't be recommending it.
