France-based Sketchfab secures USD2 million for 3D object browser

3D model sharing service Sketchfab received USD2 million in funding from Balderton and Partech. Angel investor David Cohen also participated in the round, according to a TechCrunch report.

Sketchfab is a company that allows tinkerers and designers to upload and share their 3D scans and model. The service is designed as an 3D object browser that has embedding properties. The firm gathers an average of 300 daily object files uploaded. To date, the site has seen a total of 70,000 3D files, the report said.

3D object browsers are relatively new to the web app industry, TechCrunch said in its report. The service is quite similar to Flickr for photos or YouTube for video. Through Sketchfab, viewers can follow and contact 3D artists, request copies of 3D models, and hire 3D modellers from the site, the report explained.

Alban Denoyel, Chief Executive Officer of Sketchfab, said of the service, "We only do one thing, to display 3D files in the browser, but we do it well and fast."
