The Boston College Venture Competition or BCVC hosted its second annual Startup Career Fair on Monday, February 10, the independent newspaper of Boston College The Heights reported. There were more than thirty firms that joined the event. The participants ranged from small mobile application companies to big e-commerce firms.
BCVC Executive Board Chairman Paul Hillen said Boston College students lauded last year's event. He told The Heights, "When I reached out to companies who came last year, I asked them, 'Hey, did you hire anyone?' And all them said they hired at least one person. Some hired up to three. That's really cool, that's success for us."
The participating companies this year revealed that they were looking for additional members to their team for full-time software jobs, social media internships and other positions. The students came from various majors but most of those who attended majored in business and computer science. The career fair is part of BCVC's thrust to bolster the BC entrepreneurial spirit, the report said.
Justin Robinson, Co-Founder of Drizly Inc, told The Heights that the talent pool of Boston College is getting to be more diverse. He added, "There are English majors and Spanish majors and math majors who are all interested in joining tech startups. And also lots of people who want to learn how, or are working toward, becoming an engineer. It's part of this booming job market." Drizly Inc is an alcohol delivery service that caters to clients in Boston and New York.
The Heights also reported that other recent graduates of Boston College also believed that the school's technical talents had grown stronger and have become more numerous. Meanwhile, the Venture Capital Competition of BCVC will be happening later this semester with applications from student firms accepted until 5PM on Monday, March 3, the report said.
