A vote in favor of joining Russia was casted by the Sevastopol's city council and the Crimean parliament. A referendum would be held in the next 10 days that would enact the "yes vote" of the parliament. This would occur after the Crimeans approve of the said decision to be part of the Russian federation and be among its other constituents.
On Thursday, the Crimean parliament voted to become a part of Russia, said a statement from the regional parliament. There were a total of 78 votes that were in favor of the move, reported RT. Meanwhile, 8 MPs abstained from casting their votes regarding the matter.
After the decision was announced, thousands of people who had been waiting to hear the developments from outside the parliament building screamed and cheered "Russia!"
On the other hand, the city council of Sevastopol also voted in favor of becoming a part of the Russian Federation. The council also declared that they are backing up the Crimea referendum. Meanwhile, Crimean parliament speaker Vladimir Konstantinov said that an approval from the referendum must be made for the decision to push through. City residents would take part on the referendum which has been scheduled to take place on March 16.
