Two people have died after a drunk driver went on full speed towards a crowd lining up for a concert during the SXSW Festival. The driver, who was driving a gray Toyota sedan, was pulled over by a police officer who suspected him being drunk. Instead of stopping, the driver started to engage in full throttle with the intent to evade questioning. However, he made a wrong turn on the street and headed towards a crowd lining at Red River Street.
The driver hit a man riding a bicycle, two people on a moped, a cab and crashed on the sidewalk before hitting a van, said police authorities.
According to Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo, the man tried to jump out of his car to run away but was apprehended. The police stunned him with a gun.
There were at least 23 others injured and five of them were in critical condition, says police. Meanwhile the driver was in stable condition. Out of the 23 injured, 15 have been released from the hospital on Wednesday.
The driver would face two counts of capital murder aside from the multiple counts of aggrevated assault, reported NBCNews.
