Need for Speed may ring a bell to movie goers but video gamers surely know what this one’s all about. The video game adaptation hits cinemas on the weekend but is not expected to be a record breaking hit. Need for Speed debuted as a video game in 1994 and has sold 140 million units from then.
According to Exhibitor Relations, the Need for Speed movie was expected to bring in USD21.5 million this weekend. This would mean a tough race between the video game adaptation and the 300: Rise of an Empire, showing in its second week.
Critics say that the film is pretty awful and 24 out of 100 voted not in favor of the film on Rotten Tomatoes. According to Scott Mendelson, “the movie only works because it’s so bad, it’s good.” If Need for Speed the movie flop at the box office, this would be Dream Works’ third in the row. Dream Works studio was set up by three of the “big” guys in the industry. This would include Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg. However, a series of setbacks occurred that finally got Dream Works land a distribution deal with Disney, Forbes reported.
