Tony Benn, a British statesman, died today at age 88. The former Labour MP’s death was confirmed by his children. Benn took the MP sit in November 1950 under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. He was also a popular public speaker, a political diarist and openly expressed his campaign against war.

Benn was a major left party figure.

The veteran politician and labor leader’s children, Joshua, Melissa, Hilary and Stephen said that Benn died peacefully in their home at west London. Arrangements were already made for his funeral and would be announced to the public soon, reported BBC News.

The family of Benn said, "We will miss above all his love which has sustained us throughout our lives. But we are comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life and so proud of his devotion to helping others as he sought to change the world for the better."
