Microsoft has just launched Office for iPad, and now it has also made both Office Mobile for iPhone and Office Mobile for Android free for home use. The free app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play, according to TechCrunch.
The software giant said this move was designed to help Office Mobile for Windows keep up with the iOS and Android versions. With this change, smartphone users will be able to open and edit content on their gadgets for free. But because it is only limited for home use, Microsoft may still require businesses to pay the subscription fee for Office 365, the report explained.
The Next Web cited a Microsoft spokesperson saying: "In the future we will bring Office apps to the Windows Store and other popular platforms, including Android tablets."
Microsoft hopes to get more people to subscribe to Office 365 with this launching of the new free apps. In addition, the move helps the company acquire more users for OneDrive. The launching of the Office iPad is also designed to gain Office 365 subscribers, the report added.
