Derek Martinus directed some of the best known episodes of Doctor Who in 1965 up to 1970. According to a report from BBC News, the director has died at age 82. This was confirmed by his immediate kin that Martinus died last Thursday evening after suffering from Alzheimer’s for many years. Family members said that Martinus was an inspiration and an amazing man.
Martinus was the director behind Cybermen’s introduction in The Tenth Planet. He was also the director in the four episodes when Doctor William Hartnell regenerated into Patrick Troughton. Martinus was also the director behind Doctor Who’s colored episodes.
According to his daughter Charlotta, "He was a legend, just an absolute legend. He taught me how to love, live and laugh, he was just such an amazing man." She also recalled, "It was an amazing childhood to be living among the Doctor Who paraphernalia.”
Martinus was married to his Swedish wife Eivor for 50 years.
