Shabazz Napier is one of the best players in the NCAA. Napier has been playing under a university athlete scholarship with the University of Connecticut. Recently, Napier told reporters that he would sometimes go to bed hungry as his scholarship does not cover all expenses including food, reported CNN.
The interview has prompted Connecticut legislators to look at wider options to allow UConn athletes to create labor unions. Representative Matthew Lesser and other legislators were looking to address the problem after he pointed out that the league has been making more money than what the players actually get, CNN said in a report.
Lesser said, "He says he's going to bed hungry at a time when millions of dollars are being made off of him. It's obscene. This isn't a Connecticut problem. This is an NCAA problem, and I want to make sure we're putting pressure on them to treat athletes well."
Meanwhile, Napier said "I don't feel student-athletes should get hundreds of thousands of dollars, but like I said, there are hungry nights that I go to bed and I'm starving."
