'Game of Thrones' Season 4, Episode 9 'The Watchers On The Wall' recap -- Sam, Jon Snow on rage

By

Game of Thrones' episode 9 of the fourth season is said to be the one of the most torturing, shocking, and disturbing amongst all of the show's episodes (warning: spoilers ahead).

Castle Black is in danger as The Night's watch become outnumbered.

Episode 9 starts off at the top of The Wall. Jon Snow is asked by Samwell Tarly about his adventures and daring romance with Ygritte (in Season 3, Jon was imprisoned by Ygritte's fellowmen, the Wildlings, and Jon ended up having an affair with her).

Their conversation is limited by the chaos happening on the said Wall.

Wildling raider Tormund Giantsbane is sharing stimulating stories with his experiences with a bear while they are down at the Wildling camp. Ygritte is ruminating of her vengeance against the tribes who desire attacking the Castle Black and the Night's Watch, setting aside her feud with Jon Snow.

Maester Aemon Targaryen catches Sam reading about how to torture Wildlings in the library. This gives the the Night's Watch maester a hint of Sam's great admiration for Gilly.

Ygritte helps Gilly escape from the massacre at Mole's Town. Gilly then goes her way to the gates where Sam sees him and summons Pyp to let her in. At that moment, a touching scene happens between Sam and Gilly: "Wherever you go, I go too," he pledges, saying that he won't let the two of them be apart again.

Sam and Gilly's conversation stops after they hear the horns signaling that Mance Rayder has ignited the huge bonfire - an indication of the war on Castle Black.

Meanwhile, Sam has to stand up for his castle, so he decides to leave once again, making Gilly mad. He promises not to die on the battle. He then kills a White Walker. He proves on the scene that he is a real warrior who is not afraid of war.

Everybody is on their way to their positions, when Jon Snow sees Alliser Thorne. Thorne acknowledges Snow's conviction in shutting the tunnel. They talk for a little while about Castle Black and The Wall.

Battle commences with giants and mammoths in front of the Wildlings. Rain of flaming arrows hits men and burning the other clan. Thorne rummages to the Southern Gate leaving Slynt on the lead, which turns out to be inefficient and summoning Jon Snow to replace him, as Thorne goes to his men pushing them to blast all their strengths.

A clash between Thorne, Thenn, and other wildlings bursts pool of bloody violence in the yard.

Slynt heads down to the yard and to the pantry, finding Gilly and her baby hiding.

Pyp gets to kill an enemy but afterwards, and Ygritte manages to fire an arrow straight to Pyp's throat. Sam then gives out words to his dying friend. After that, Sam is yearning for vengeance firing from his crossbow.

"Hold the fucking gate," Thorne commands his army while battling to death.

Pyp, Grenn, Ygritte and Alliser Thorne die in this episode.
