Windows 8.1 Tips and Tricks

By

Users who have updated to Windows 8.1 can find the following tips and tricks useful for a variety of tasks.

Smart Files

This allows people to view your SkyDive files without downloading everything onto their computer. While browsing through the SkyDive folder in File Explorer, there will be a column named Availability. By default, all the files will be listed as Online Only, which means that the user can view the files without downloading them onto your computer as long as the user is connected to the Internet. If the person wants a specific file or folder to be viewable while offline, switch on the Make Available Offline option.

Display the Apps Screen Instead of The Start Screen

In Windows 8.1, new applications that people install do not necessarily automatically appear on the start screen. Because of this, the Apps Screen may become more useful since this screen displays all of the applications that have been installed. You can configure Windows to display the Apps Screen instead of the Start Screen when you click the Start button. Do this by opening the desktop > Right click the taskbar > Click Properties > Click the navigation tab > Go to Start Screen > Check Show the Apps View Automatically When I Go to Start.

Group Tiles Together on the Start Screen

Users can organize the tiles on the Start Screen into groups of similar tiles. For example, organizing all Microsoft Office tiles into one group. To create a group, click and drag a tile to the right of its current group until a shaded bar appears. Proceed to drop the tile into the shaded bar to create a new group containing that tile. People can then add new tiles to join the new group. Users may also name each tile group to their liking by right-clicking any empty area of the Start screen to open the Options bar, then click Customize. Move the cursor to the text box above the group of tiles, then enter a name for the group and press Enter.
