Robin Williams Checks into Rehab to "Fine-Tune" His Sobriety

By

Robin Williams was recently spotted at a Dairy Queen in Lindstrom, Minnesota, to the bafflement of the locals, and even the local news, who reported "No one really knows what he was doing in Lindstrom."

Now, things have become a little clearer. Williams is in Minnesota to visit the Hazelden Addiction Treatment Center, a rehab clinic located in Center City Minnesota. The Dairy Queen visit, it seems, must have been needed to calm down his sweet tooth.

However, the actor's visit to a rehab clinic doesn't necessarily mean he's relapsed into his drug habits- according to a statement from Williams' representatives to ABC, Williams is still very much sober.

"After working back-to-back projects, Robin is simply taking the opportunity to fine-tune and focus on his continued commitment, of which he remains extremely proud,"

It seems this rehab visit is just to strengthen Williams' sobriety, and not to counteract any sudden relapses. ABC mentions that he had planned to return to rehab for quite a while, and that the actor had already completed the majority of his stay at Hazelden.

The actor has had issues with both alcohol and cocaine for years, originally going sober in 1982 after friend and fellow actor John Belushi died in a tragic overdose. The last time his addictions made the news was in 2006, when he checked into rehab after beginning to drink again. In 2006, Williams made this statement to Diane Sawyer:

"It's [addiction] -- not caused by anything, it's just there. It waits. It lays in wait for the time when you think, 'It's fine now, I'm OK.' Then, the next thing you know, it's not OK. Then you realize, 'Where am I? I didn't realize I was in Cleveland.'"

Williams first rocketed into the spotlight as the alien character Mork on the sitcom "Happy Days," which later spun off into his own series, "Mork & Mindy." This year, he will star in "The Angriest Man in Brooklyn," and portray president Theodore Roosevelt once again in "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb."
