2014 NBA Free Agent Rumors: Pau Gasol to the Oklahoma City Thunder

By

The Oklahoma City Thunders are rarely on the front page of teams trying to pursue big free agents names mainly because they don't have much money to play around with in the first place - as most of their salary cap space are locked into their stars in Russel Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and Serge Ibaka.

According to a report from Marc Stein, however, the Thunder have made contact to both Pau Gasol and Mike Miller. More surprisingly, the Thunder have risen as the frontrunner for Lakers center Pau Gasol's next destination, with a handful of other teams such as the Bulls in pursuit, at least that what ESPN's Ramona Shelburne suggests.

"In a surprising twist, OKC has come on strong with Pau Gasol, and described as a "frontrunner" for the Spaniard." Ramona Shelburne said in a tweet.

Apparently, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook traveled to L.A and made a face-to-face pitch on Gasol. OKC's GM Sam Presti also reached out to the Spaniard on the phone according to ESPNLosAngeles.com. A report depicted Gasol as "opening up to the possibility" of teaming up with the super star duo of Durant and Westbrook. Gasol also feels that the Thunder offers him the best opportunity to add another NBA title to his resume even more than Miami, who is also courting him.

Gasol heading to OKC makes sense for both sides because while the Thunder's offense is potent, its not free flowing. The Thunder team often generate their offense from Durant and Westbrook and most of the time, the ball sticks in their hands. The big Spaniard's naturally gifted passing ability and unselfish play would certainly help add some ball movement in the Thunder's offense and give them more options down low.

And while Gasol is not known as a defender, his 7 foot frame can help slow down the likes of Tim Duncan in the playoffs. Also, at this point in their careers, Gasol is without a doubt a major upgrade over the tough minded Kendrick Perkins in the center position.

Although it would be nice to see Pau Gasol playing alongside Durant, Westbrook, and former Spanish National Team teamate Serge Ibaka, and possibly win an NBA title, money may be a big factor why it won't happen. OKC is limited to roughly $5 million in spending cash under the luxury-tax line at present.

Gasol may not be the all-star that he once was 5 years or so ago, but he should get better offers, even from Miami and especially from the Lakers. But who knows, Gasol might actually take the $5 million because he feels that OKC is worth the discount.
