Project Volta and Material Design count as the most standout features during Google's announcement of the Android L. The Material Design feature of the mobile operating system update was considered flashy but also fresh. More importantly, Project Volta will be addressing the most common problem or concern among smartphone users: battery usage and drain. True to the company's claim, Android L has reportedly addressed the battery problem in the Nexus 5 including a new dialer for a fresh experience.
Android L update provides a series of battery tweaks and features to avoid fast drain and extend operating time of devices. Ars Technica reported that people can use their devices longer with one charge thanks to Project Volta. The report also highlighted an experiment featuring the Android L on one device and the Android 4.4.4 update on the other. Techno Buffalo reported that the device running on Android L walked away as winner. The device offered a total of 471 minutes equivalent to 8 hours running time while the device on Android 4.4.4 only offered 345 minutes or around 6 hours of running time.
The Android L device offered 36% better battery life against the Android 4.4.4 device. Ars Technica also noted that although they disabled the device's "battery saver" feature, the update turns it on automatically once battery percentage hit 15%. Project Volta is the brainchild between the features of Project Butter and Project Svelte. Butter concentrated on animations while Svelte improved compatibility of Android on older units.
As for the Material Design, consumers can expect a new Dialer feature. The Dialer works similarly to the previous function but with better layout. The design change is refreshing and it also works better than the previous one according to reports. Google got rid of multiple levels and outside pages and stuck to one screen.
Google will also be reportedly releasing the Nexus 6 sometime soon.
