2014 NBA Free Agency: Mavs Big Gamble in Chandler Parsons pays off; succeed in improving their roster this offseason

By

The Dallas Maverick's front office must have felt great relief after their extremely risky gamble on Houston Rockets restricted free agent forward Chandler Parsons paid off. Parson's is now officially part of the Mavs roster this coming season after the Rockets declined their right to match the three-year, $46 million offer sheet that he signed with Dallas.

It took three days before the Mavs finally received confirmation from the Rockets that they won't be matching Parson's offer sheet. During these crucial time frame, the Mavs watched their Plan B targets - in case they miss out on Parsons - sign on other teams. Trevor Ariza went to the Rockets, Luol Deng agreed to a deal with the Heat, while Paul Pierce signed with the Wizards.

Suddenly, it looked like if the Rockets were going to match the offer on Parsons, the Mavs were already out of options in upgrading their small forward position. More over, they already lost two of their best sharp shooters with Vince Carter agreeing to terms with the Grizzlies and Jose Calderon being shipped out to New York as part of a trade deal to acquire Tyson Chandler.

Fortunately for Dallas, the Rockets decided not to Match Parson's offer allowing them to acquire a 25-year-old borderline All-Star who has consistently made great strides in improving his overall game for the past three seasons. Chandler Parson's, who was selected as the 38th overall pick by the Houston Rockets, was one of the biggest steals in the 2011 NBA draft. He was also one of the biggest bargain's last season after averaging16.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 4.0 apg and shot 37.0 percent from beyond the arc with his less than a million a year rookie contract.

For the Mavs, the risk paid off gloriously, Chandler Parsons is a tremendous upgrade over Shawn Marion who has been on the decline. The 36-year old former All-Star will possibly be heading to another team as Dallas is left with only a $2.73 million exception which they'll will mostl likely utilize for a shooter to fill up the void left by Calderon's departure. The sharpshooting guard Mo Williams has reported to be on the Mavs radar.

Dallas has clearly improved their roster this off-season. In the recent playoffs, they took took eventual champion San Antonio to seven games in the first round. Interior defense was the obvious culprit and the Mavs quickly pulled the trigger to reacquire the 7-1 former DPOY center Tyson Chandler.

Now, by rolling the dice and coupled with a little luck, the Mavs were able to steal the other Chandler, as in Pasons, away from the Houston Rockets. This game the Mavs a young corner stone player that will prove vital in their success as they maximize the few years left in Dirk Nowitzki's hall of fame career.
