'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' update: Release date may be moved to 2017, writer Roberto Orci 'uncertain' about film's future, 'Sinister Six' may take over 2016 release

The release date for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" has been tentatively set for June 10, 2016, but recent reports say that fans may have to wait longer.

A report by Screenrant cites a source claiming that Sony will release the movie no sooner than 2017.

Sony has not confirmed anything yet, but a recent interview with Roberto Orci--co-writer and part of the "brain trust" for the franchise--revealed that even he is uncertain of the film's future.

In an interview with IGN, Orci said that he has no idea about Sony's plans for the franchise. "I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else."

He adds: "There's a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom -- there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business. He's such a popular character. Spider-Man's not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined."

When asked about his involvement in the third "Amazing Spider-Man 3," Orci made it clear that he is "not officially involved in it."

There are rumors that "The Sinister Six"--the spin-off about a team of six Spider-Man villains--could take over the previously-announced 2016 "Spider-Man 3" release date.

There were high expectations for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," but it did not do well in the box office. Sony was reportedly aiming for a billion-dollar mark, but it turned out to be the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise (domestically and worldwide).
