"The Amazing Spider-Man 3" already has a release date: June 10, 2016. Its sequel, "The Amazing Spider-Man 4," has a release date as well, on May 4, 2018.
Don't assume these dates are set in stone, however. According to new updates from those involved with the franchise, the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise might be in a little bit of trouble.
First, Sony announced that the 2018 date for the fourth "Spider-Man" film might be switched around, with part four getting a different date and one of the film's two spin-offs, "Venom" and "The Sinister Six," being ushered into the May 4 slot.
That, alone, isn't a sign that we should worry about Peter Parker's future. However, later statements from two of the film's screenwriters are definitely cause for concern. Alex Kurtzman, one of the creative leaders of the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise and writer of the second and third films, was asked by Collider about the exact release date of "The Amazing Spider-Man 3." His answer?
"It's still in conversation. Everybody is still figuring it out. "
Which doesn't sound nearly as concrete as Sony did when they first staked out a 2016 summer spot. Kurtzman added, "It's all up for grabs, right now. We're just trying to figure it out." Overall, he doesn't sound too confident.
Then, Roberto Orci, who recently left the "Spider-Man" franchise to work on the next "Star Trek" film, added his own thoughts in an interview with IGN.
"I don't know what their plans are for that franchise," said Orci to IGN. "I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else."
"The Amazing Spider-Man 3" will get off the ground somehow- if it doesn't, Sony loses the rights to Marvel Studios, and they wouldn't let such a profitable franchise slip through their fingers. The only question, really, is when the movie actually comes out.
