The Dallas Mavericks must be feeling good heading into the 2014-2015 season after they managed to pull off some quality free agent signings this summer in the 2014 NBA Free Agency. They may have missed out on their primary target Carmelo Anthony, who signed a 5 year max-contract with the Knew York Knicks, but they were able to steal Chandler Parsons away from the Houston Rockets and reacquired their defensive anchor in the 2011 championship run Tyson Chandler from the Knicks via sign and trade deal.
And the Mavericks are apparently not done yet as they continued to fortify their roster for the coming season when they signed former Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson to a two-year contract worth $5.586 million on Thursday. Nelson, who spent 10 years of his career with the Magic, was also excited to be part of the Mavs organization this summer.
"I feel like this team is really good," Nelson said Thursday on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM. "I've been watching the Mavs from afar for my entire career. I admire what they've done over my 10 years and even before that. The organization, from everyone I know, is top of the line."
Nelson was the Denver Nuggets 20th overall pick in the 20114 NBA draft but was later traded to the Orlando Magic for a 2005 first-round draft pick. the 6-foot, 190 pound explosive guard became an All-Star on 2009 and has averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 assists per game in his career. He made 12.1 points and dished out 7.0 assists every game for the Magic last season.
Nelson was a key player for the Magic and a big part of the City of Orlando. Dwain Price of the star-telegram.com has this to say:
"The 32-year-old Nelson was such a fixture and fan favorite in Orlando that the Magic rented two billboards around town to thank him for his decade of service. The Mavs expect him to bring that same on-court and locker room presence to their organization."
This is clearly one of the most productive off-seasons for the Mavs in the Dirk Nowitzki era. The team is stacked in every position and many experts are putting the team as the 4th best in the NBA - with the potential to beat the power houses of the Western Conference namely the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Los Angeles Clippers.
