After acquiring Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton via trade from the New York Knicks and stealing Chandler Parsons away from the Houston Rocket, the Dallas Mavericks have been quite busy this offseason and have so far been successful in surrounding Nowtizki with the right mix of talent for another shot of an NBA title in the the twilight of his career.
But the Mavs are not done yet. Armed with their $2.7 million cap room exception, the team is reportedly looking at two veteran point guards to complete their roster: Jameer Nelson and Mo Williams.
Recent reports indicate though that the mavericks are closing in a deal to former Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson. If all gos well, Nelson and the Mavs are on point to formalize a deal Thursday, when the veteran guard visits Dallas. It was reported on Tuesday that the Mavs have already arranged a flight for Nelson to Dallas for a face-to-face visit Thursday to finalize a contract with their $2.7 million room exception.
Dallas intends to integrate Nelson in a dynamic guard rotation that features Devin Harris and Raymond Felton at the point position and Monta Ellis at shooting guard. The plan is to consistently have a fresh group of legs and an experienced ball handler at the point so the team can play up up-tempo the entire game much like the Spurs.
An up-tempo game is ideal to the Mavs system especially on how their roster is built with Ellis and newly acquired free-agent Chandler Parsons filling the wings. Ellis and Parsons are one of the league leaders in fast break points last season and the team also has a lot of bigs like Tyson Chandler, Brandan Wright, and Al-Farouq Aminu, who can run the floor and finish in the break. Nowtizk, on the other hand, while not known for his speed and his athleticism, has always been known as a trailer in transition - delivering bombs from beyond the arc when defenses try to focus on the ball handler when they make their way to the rim in transition.
Nelson, who averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 assists in his entire career with Orlando, gives Dallas a unique weapon that none of its current guards have: perimeter shooting. Its an element that Dallas needed to fill after they shipped Jose Calderon to New York via the Tyson Chandler trade.
