The Kevin Love off-season drama has finally come to an end after Yahoo Sports and numerous other media portals have reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers have reached an agreement in principle to trade Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers for their pair of No.1 overall picks in Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett and a protected 2015 first-round draft pick, per ESPN.
This report is another glorious triumph for the Cleveland Cavaliers who have just reunited with LeBron James and now will add arguably the best power forward in the NBA in their roster. This also means that the Boston Celtics can finally move on after being part of numerous Kevin Love trade rumors for the last couple of months.
Celtics fans know first hand how it feels to be flirted by Kevin Love this summer. From his unannounced visit to Boston on June to his 'accidental' meeting with Celtics star point guard Rajon Rondo at Fenway Park, Celtics fans were almost convinced that it was a sign that Kevin Love was coming to Boston and help resurrect a team that won a mere 25 games last year in a rebuilding season as documented by Chris Forsberg.
But aside from numerous pictures of Kevin Love walking the streets of Boston, there were concrete reasons for fans to believe that the Minnesota star forward was a realistic acquisition this summer. The Celtics were in position to pair another star to Rajon Rondo with a treasure of trade assets that includes an army of young talented players with cheap contracts, draft picks, and non guaranteed contracts, per ESPNBoston, that would entice any team like the Timberwolves who want some value in return for their super star.
But when the Cavaliers won the No.1 overall pick in the draft lottery for the second year in a row and LeBron decided that its time to come back home to Cleveland and play for his home town team, it was clear that the Cleveland Cavaliers were the undisputed frontrunner to land Love. They offer the best package for Minnesota with their two first round draft picks and Love publicly expressed his desire to play with James and vice versa.
The Boston Celtics clearly have the assets to convince the Timberwolves to pull the trigger on a Kevin Love trade but the potential of landing a top talent like Andrew Wiggins was simply to good to pass for Minnesota. The news may still be hard to accept for Celtics fans but at least now they can move on from all the drama and nonsense that surrounded Kevin Love this offseason.
